Global Electricity Review: A New Milestone
Ember’s Global Electricity Review reveals that Wind & Solar Power Generation accounted for 15% of global electricity last year. Moreover, India contributed significantly, with renewables driving growth and generating 22% of its electricity. Notably, hydropower led the way at 8%, while wind and solar power combined accounted for 10%, paving the way for a future of Clean Electricity.
Renewable Energy Leads the Charge
Globally, renewables led the growth in clean electricity, adding a record 858 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2024 — 49% more than the previous record in 2022. Solar was the largest source of new electricity for the third straight year, adding 474 TWh in 2024. It was also the fastest-growing power source for the 20th year in a row.
India’s Solar Power Generation Doubles
India drives rapid solar power growth, accounting for 7% of its electricity in 2024. Moreover, capacity doubled since 2021. Notably, India installed 24 gigawatts of solar capacity in 2024, surpassing the 2023 addition by more than twofold. India became the third-largest market, following China and the US. The International Energy Agency predicts that India’s solar capacity will surge to 140 GW by 2025, up from 40 GW in 2020, paving the way for a future of Wind & Solar Power Generation and Clean Electricity.
