Sustainable Tourism Development: BRICS Countries Unite for a Greener Future
Breaking Down Barriers: BRICS Tourism Ministers Meet in Brasília
Minister Celso Sabino led the BRICS Tourism Ministers’ meeting on Monday (12/05) at Itamaraty Palace in Brasília. Then, the gathering endorsed the Cerrado Declaration. This pivotal document actively promotes Sustainable Tourism Development, driving eco-friendly and regenerative tourism practices. Next, it advocates for inclusive tourism, responding to the increasing needs of Digital Nomads.
Sustainable Tourism: A Driver for Economic Growth
Celso Sabino highlighted the strategic role of tourism as a driving force for economic, social, and environmental development of countries in the bloc. “We are taking another firm step towards this goal, in line with the multilateralism so strongly advocated by our president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva,” said Sabino. “The Cerrado Declaration is a milestone in the history of global tourism. The countries that are part of BRICS form the largest economy, the largest consumer market, and the largest group of tourists. This document defines how our countries should direct their actions in tourism.”
Brazil’s Vision for a Sustainable Future
Marcelo Freixo, Embratur’s president, envisions a sector that drives regional integration and cooperation among Global South nations. Specifically, he prioritizes tourism as a key catalyst. Moreover, Freixo reaffirms Brazil’s dedication to Sustainable Tourism Development, highlighting its potential to foster inclusivity and eco-friendliness. He also acknowledges the growing importance of Remote Professionals, such as Digital Nomads, in shaping the industry’s future.
The Cerrado Declaration: A Blueprint for Sustainable Tourism
The Cerrado Declaration consolidates advances discussed in the Working Group meetings, establishing three strategic axes for international cooperation in the sector:
• Development of Regional Tourism: Recognizing regional tourism as a strategic priority for BRICS. The report highlights six key sectors: infrastructure, diversification of supply, professional qualification, public-private partnerships, financing, and joint promotion of destinations.
• Sustainable, Resilient, and Regenerative Tourism: Positioning tourism as a driver of economic, social, and environmental development. Addressing issues such as public policies, resilience to crises, community participation, and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
• Attracting Digital Nomads: Recognizing the potential of digital nomads as a vector for innovation and inclusion. The declaration proposes measures to facilitate visas, expand digital connectivity, improve infrastructure, and develop joint promotional actions.
Looking Ahead: BRICS and COP30
Sabino announces that COP30, in Belém do Pará in November, will dedicate a day to eco-friendly travel solutions. Specifically, the event will tackle environmental degradation and climate change. Moreover, he invites all to attend the World Climate Conference, a historic moment. By hosting COP30, Brazil takes a significant step towards Sustainable Tourism Development. Additionally, the event will cater to the growing Remote Workforce, including Digital Nomads, contributing to the global climate dialogue.
The Cerrado Declaration represents a pivotal moment in the history of global tourism, solidifying BRICS countries’ commitment to sustainable tourism development. In addition, it reinforces their dedication to inclusive travel practices, thereby benefiting regional tourism. Moreover, it acknowledges the growing importance of Remote Workers, who contribute to the sector’s growth. Consequently, as we move forward towards a more inclusive and sustainable governance, the role of BRICS countries in shaping eco-friendly tourism development will be crucial.
