Russia, officially the Russian Federation
Russia, country that stretches over a vast expanse of eastern Europe and northern Asia. Once the preeminent republic of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.; commonly known as the Soviet Union), Russia became an independent country after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991. Since becoming independent, Russia has undergone significant political, economic, and social changes. The transition from a socialist to a capitalist economy has been marked by challenges and successes, as the country navigates its way through the complexities of globalization and modernization.
The Russian flag is a horizontal triband. The used colors in the flag are blue, red, white. The proportion of the Russian flag is 2:3. The Flag of Russia was adopted in 1991. The first use of the current flag design was in 1700. The last change to the current Russian flag design was in 1993.
The “State Anthem of the Russian Federation“ is the national anthem of Russia. It uses the same melody as the “State Anthem of the Soviet Union”, composed by Alexander Alexandrov, and new lyrics by Sergey Mikhalkov. After Vladimir Putin, first took office on 7 May 2000, the federal legislature approved the music of the National Anthem of the Soviet Union, with newly written lyrics, in December 2000.
