Mental Health Services: 15,227 Citizens Benefited from Geriatric Psychiatry in Egypt

In Egypt, the Ministry of Health and Population has taken significant strides in providing mental health services to its citizens. According to recent reports, a staggering 15,227 medical services were provided through outpatient clinics for geriatric psychiatry in hospitals and centers of the General Secretariat for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment.
Raising Awareness of Alzheimer’s Disease
The General Secretariat for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment has been instrumental in organizing a scientific day to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease, in cooperation with the “Alzheimer’s Egypt” Association. This initiative aims to educate the public on the importance of early detection, prevention, and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.
Enhancing Healthcare Infrastructure
As part of the ministry’s efforts to improve the quality of healthy life for the elderly, work is underway to equip a hospital for geriatric psychiatry in the medical city in New Alamein City, with a bed capacity of up to 120 beds. This development will significantly enhance the healthcare infrastructure for elderly citizens.
Capacity Building for Healthcare Professionals
Menan Abdel-Maksoud, Secretary-General of the General Secretariat for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment, emphasized the importance of raising awareness of Alzheimer’s disease, reducing the risk of contracting the disease, and discussing the role of the caregiver in the patient’s life. The scientific day also introduced the latest treatment methods for Alzheimer’s disease.
Training Healthcare Professionals
The Department of Geriatric Psychiatry at the General Secretariat for Mental Health provides various activities and courses to train doctors, psychologists, social workers, and nurses who care for elderly patients. This training aims to improve the efficiency of the service provided to elderly citizens. In addition, 26 doctors, 25 nurses, psychologists, and social workers who provide care for the elderly were trained in 14 hospitals affiliated with the General Secretariat for Mental Health.
