India, a nation that constitutes the majority of the South Asian region, is composed of 28 states and eight union territories. The national capital, New Delhi, was established in the 20th century, situated to the south of the historical epicenter of Old Delhi, and functions as the country’s administrative core. The government of India operates as a constitutional republic, serving an immensely varied demographic that includes innumerable ethnic entities and a multitude of languages. As per the United Nations’ estimates, India attained the status of the most populous country globally in the year 2023.

The national anthem of the Republic of India, “Jana Gana Mana,” which translates to ‘Thou Art the Ruler of the Minds of All People,’ holds a venerable position in the nation’s cultural heritage. The anthem was written by Rabindranath Tagore in Bengali on 11 December 1911. The Constituent Assembly of India adopted it as the official National Anthem on January 24, 1950.
