Facial Biometrics to Boost Travel Security in Intercity Vans: Brazil
A Milestone in Transportation Security
In a groundbreaking move, the State of Rio has announced the implementation of facial biometrics in intercity vans to enhance travel security and prevent fraud. This innovative technology will be rolled out in ten phases, with the first batch of vehicles being equipped starting January 2025.
Strengthening the Intercity Single Ticket (BUI)
Facial Biometrics revolutionizes the security of the Intercity Single Ticket (BUI). This innovative system, implemented by Detro-RJ, effectively prevents fraud and ensures proper ticket usage. Moreover, the face recognition technology enhances overall safety for passengers traveling in Intercity Vans. Consequently, commuters can enjoy peace of mind during their journeys. Additionally, this measure streamlines the verification process, reducing boarding times and improving efficiency. Furthermore, the new protocol, announced in the Official Gazette last Thursday, marks a significant step towards modernizing public transportation. As a result, travelers can expect a more secure and seamless experience when using intercity transport services. Ultimately, this advanced system reinforces the state’s commitment to passenger safety and efficient urban mobility.
Combating Fraud and Irregularities
Facial biometrics will play a crucial role in combating fraudulent activities, such as the use of the BUI by someone other than the cardholder. This technology has already been tested in some regulated vans, resulting in a daily saving of around R$40 thousand for the public coffers.
Benefits for Passengers and Operators
Leonardo Matias, president of Detro-RJ, emphasized the importance of facial biometrics in combating irregular spending. Specifically, he stated, “Our inspection team now uses this technology to enforce the 2016 Decree more effectively.” Furthermore, Matias explained that the state subsidizes the BUI benefit to help people integrate different transport modes. However, he stressed that this benefit primarily targets those most in need. Additionally, Matias warned, “Misuse of the BUI drains public funds and ultimately burdens all system users.” Consequently, by implementing face recognition, the agency aims to prevent fraud and ensure the subsidy reaches its intended recipients. As a result, this approach not only protects public resources but also maintains fair pricing for all passengers using the transportation system. In essence, the new biometric system serves as a crucial tool in safeguarding both public funds and user interests.
Rollout Schedule and Key Dates
The implementation of Facial Biometrics in Intercity Vans follows a carefully planned schedule. This rollout ensures a smooth transition for both operators and passengers. Here’s a breakdown of the key dates: Firstly, the face recognition system will launch in select routes as a pilot program. Subsequently, operators will receive training on the new technology to familiarize themselves with its operation.
Next, passengers will be informed about the upcoming changes through various communication channels. Following this, a gradual implementation will begin across different van lines and routes. There will be a grace period for passengers to register their facial data in the system. After this, full enforcement of the new biometric verification will commence on all intercity transportation. Finally, authorities will conduct regular reviews to assess the system’s effectiveness and make necessary adjustments. This phased approach aims to minimize disruption while maximizing security benefits for all users. Here are the key dates to remember:
- Lot I (58 vehicles in seven lines): January 6th to 31st
- Lot II (57 vehicles in eight lines): February 3 to 28
- Lot III (53 vehicles in five lines): March 6 to 31
- Lot IV (47 vehicles in six lines): April 1st to 30th
- Lot V (59 vehicles in seven lines): May 5th to 30th
- Lot VI (56 vehicles in two lines): June 2nd to 30th
- Lot VII (65 vehicles in nine lines): July 1st to 31st
- Lot VIII (60 vehicles in nine lines): August 1st to 29th
- Lot IX (65 vehicles in 34 lines): September 1st to 30th
- Lot X (11 vehicles in six lines): October 1st to 6th
A New Era in Transportation Security
The implementation of facial biometrics in intercity vans marks a significant milestone in transportation security. With this technology, passengers can enjoy a more secure and efficient travel experience, while the state government can ensure that the BUI benefit reaches its intended recipients. As Secretary Washington Reis highlighted, “We want passengers to have peace of mind when boarding vans and greater security when traveling, enjoying the discount granted by the State Government.”
