Ethiopian Coders Revolution: Boosting Digital Economy through Coding
A Digital Leap for Ethiopia’s Youth
In a significant move to bridge the digital divide, the Ethiopian government has launched the “Five Million Ethiopian Coders” project, aiming to equip five million youth with essential digital skills, including coding, web programming, and data science, over the next three years. This ambitious initiative, launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, marks a crucial step towards developing Ethiopia’s digital economy.
Partnership for Progress
Ethiopian Coders will benefit from a collaborative project with the United Arab Emirates, bolstering bilateral relations between the nations. Consequently, the UAE’s digital prowess will empower Ethiopia’s youth with globally sought-after Digital Skills. Moreover, this alliance exemplifies the burgeoning cooperation between African and Middle Eastern countries. Subsequently, the partnership aligns with BRICS’ emphasis on South-South collaboration. Furthermore, aspiring programmers will gain access to cutting-edge technological expertise. Henceforth, this initiative will catalyze Ethiopia’s digital transformation, propelling its youth into the global tech arena. Ultimately, this symbiotic relationship will foster innovation and economic growth in both regions.
Empowering Youth, Empowering the Economy
State Minister of Innovation and Technology, Yishrun Alemayehu, emphasized the importance of digital skills in developing a digital economy. “Creating a society with digital skills is one of the major goals of Digital Ethiopia 2025,” he said. The acquisition of digital skills will not only enhance the employability of Ethiopian youth but also increase their contribution to the country’s economic growth.
Training for a Digital Future
Ethiopian Coders will embark on a rigorous six-week online training program, focusing on data science, android development, and programming. Subsequently, UDTC, a renowned international organization, will spearhead this intensive course. Upon completion, participants will earn an internationally recognized certificate. Consequently, this accreditation will substantially enhance their employability in the tech sector. Furthermore, these aspiring programmers will acquire cutting-edge Digital Skills, positioning them at the forefront of technological innovation. Henceforth, this comprehensive package will equip trainees with the tools necessary to thrive in the ever-evolving digital landscape.
Overcoming Infrastructure Challenges
To ensure the successful implementation of the project, the government has committed to providing necessary support to areas with limited internet and power connectivity. This demonstrates the government’s commitment to leaving no one behind in the digital revolution.
With over 95,000 youth already registered, the “Five Million Ethiopian Coders” project is poised to create a society equipped with digital skills, paving the way for a brighter future. As Ethiopia continues to grow and develop, it is clear that the country’s digitally empowered youth will play a vital role in driving this progress.
