Welfare and health of Emirates

In recent years, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has shown significant improvement in its healthcare system, leading to an increase in life expectancy at birth. Currently, the average life expectancy in the UAE stands at an impressive 76.96 years. However, despite these advancements, challenges still remain, with cardiovascular disease being the leading cause of death in the country, accounting for 28% of total deaths. In addition to cardiovascular disease, other major causes of death in the UAE include accidents and injuries, malignancies, and congenital anomalies. These health issues pose significant challenges to the population’s overall well-being and highlight the importance of continued efforts to improve healthcare services and promote healthy lifestyles. One concerning trend in the UAE is the high prevalence of obesity among adults. According to data from the World Health Organisation in 2016, 34.5% of adults in the UAE are clinically obese, with a body mass index (BMI) score of 30 or more. This alarming statistic underscores the need for increased awareness and interventions to address the obesity epidemic in the country. Overall, while the UAE has made great strides in improving life expectancy and healthcare outcomes, there is still work to be done to address the leading causes of death and promote healthier lifestyles among the population. By focusing on prevention, early detection, and effective treatment strategies, the UAE can further enhance the health and well-being of its citizens for years to come.

The Ministry of Health’s five-year health strategy for the public health sector in the northern emirates, introduced in February 2008, marks a significant step towards improving healthcare services for residents in the region. The strategy not only aims to unify healthcare policy but also focuses on enhancing access to healthcare services at an affordable cost. By reducing the reliance on overseas treatment, the ministry is prioritizing the well-being of the local population. As part of this comprehensive strategy, the ministry has outlined plans to expand the current healthcare infrastructure by adding three hospitals and 29 primary healthcare centers in the northern emirates. This expansion will not only increase the availability of medical facilities but will also ensure that residents have access to quality care closer to home. Furthermore, with nine primary healthcare centers set to open in 2008 alone, the ministry is making tangible progress towards achieving its goals outlined in the strategy. By investing in healthcare facilities and services within the region, the ministry is demonstrating its commitment to improving the overall health and well-being of residents in the northern emirates. Overall, the Ministry of Health’s five-year health strategy represents a significant investment in the future of healthcare in the northern emirates. By prioritizing accessibility, affordability, and quality in healthcare services, the ministry is taking proactive steps to improve the overall health outcomes for residents in the region.

The implementation of mandatory health insurance in Abu Dhabi for expatriates and their dependents played a significant role in healthcare policy reform. Abu Dhabi nationals were included in the scheme from June 1, 2008, and Dubai followed suit for its government employees. Eventually, every Emirati and expatriate in the country will be covered by compulsory health insurance under a unified mandatory scheme, as per federal law. The UAE has also become a popular destination for medical tourists from the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf. The country offers high standards of healthcare services, particularly in areas such as cosmetic surgery, advanced procedures, cardiac and spinal surgery, and dental treatment, surpassing those of other Arab countries in the Persian Gulf.
