Embracing a new era for business travel, China actively shifts its approach to cross-border travel with the ASEAN Visa. Catering to businesspeople and their families from 11 participating nations, this visa allows multiple visits over five years, with stays of up to 180 days per trip. Additionally, this visa will simplify travel for family members and children who meet the necessary requirements.

Building on Existing Agreements

China builds upon its existing mutual visa exemption agreements with countries in the region, including Thailand and Malaysia. Paving the way, these agreements have led to the introduction of the ASEAN Visa, further streamlining travel. In addition, this new visa category will facilitate greater mobility and cooperation between China and Southeast Asia.

A Common Goal: Facilitating Cross-Border Travel

According to Lin, the level of exchanges between China and Southeast Asian countries has been high, with a mutual hope to ease travel between the two regions. The introduction of the ASEAN visa is a step towards achieving this common goal, facilitating cross-border travel and enhancing regional ties.

A Boost to Regional Economy

The ASEAN Visa will transform the regional economy, it fosters growth and facilitates trade between nations. Additionally, China’s foreign trade heavily relies on the region, with over 30% accounted for in 2024. As a result, the unified travel permit is expected to boost bilateral trade, increasing investment flows.

A Step Towards Regional Integration

China takes a significant step towards regional integration by introducing a unified travel permit for Southeast Asia. This move aligns with its broader efforts to strengthen economic and cultural ties in the region. Facilitating cross-border mobility will play a vital role in fostering greater cooperation and understanding. Moreover, this travel permit will enhance regional cooperation, stimulating economic growth and promoting cross-border mobility.

China actively strengthens its ties with Southeast Asia, making a unified travel permit a cornerstone of this relationship. China’s investment in the region, accounting for over 15% of its total outward investment in 2024, will further solidify its lead. This partnership will boost growth and exchange between the two, fostering a deeper connection.
