Nationwide Survey of Agricultural Germplasm Resources: China
Survey Sheds Light on Country’s Crop, Livestock, and Aquaculture Resources
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has announced the completion of China’s third nationwide survey of agricultural germplasm resources, which began in March 2021. This comprehensive survey has yielded fruitful results, providing valuable insights into the country’s agricultural resources.
Comprehensive Coverage Across China
Covering an extensive 2,323 agricultural counties across China, the survey included 332 counties not covered by the previous two surveys. Moreover, the scope was expanded to include agricultural germplasm resources in arid zones, plateaus, border regions, and areas with ethnic group members.
Key Findings and Achievements
The survey yielded several significant achievements. Researchers collected around 139,000 pieces of crop germplasm resources, including nearly 10,000 soybean samples. Furthermore, they completed a comprehensive mapping of livestock and poultry resources, identifying 51 new local species. Notably, the team rediscovered 10 species previously declared extinct in the second survey. During this process, scientists also implemented efforts to save and conserve rare species.
Aquaculture Germplasm Resources Included for the First Time
The Ministry of Agriculture conducted a groundbreaking Nationwide Survey that included aquaculture resources for the first time. Liu Xinzhong, director of the ministry’s fisheries bureau, announced the collection of 857 aquatic breeding materials. This comprehensive study significantly expanded the scope of genetic diversity research. Moreover, it incorporated valuable Crop Germplasm from aquatic environments into the national database. Consequently, researchers now have access to a broader range of aquatic genetic resources. This inclusion will undoubtedly enhance future breeding programs and conservation efforts in the aquaculture sector.
Conservation Efforts
Liu Lihua, director of the ministry’s department of seed industry, emphasized the significance of the survey, stating that it has “mapped the number of species, regional distribution, and characteristics of germplasm resources for crops, livestock, poultry, and aquaculture in China.” The survey’s findings will crucially inform efforts to conserve and utilize these valuable resources.
New National Crop Germplasm Resources Bank Established
Furthermore, China’s new national crop germplasm resources bank has been established and become operational, with a preservation capacity of 1.5 million resources. This bank will play a vital role in the conservation and utilization of agricultural germplasm resources.
In conclusion, China’s third nationwide survey of agricultural germplasm resources has provided valuable insights into the country’s agricultural resources, highlighting the need for continued conservation and utilization efforts to ensure food security and sustainable development. The survey’s findings will have a significant impact on the country’s agricultural development, and its results will be instrumental in shaping China’s agricultural policies.
