Brazil has taken the reins of BRICS presidency until December 31st, 2025, driving global governance reform and cooperation among Global South countries. By assuming the chair, Brazil will host the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7, 2025.
Rio de Janeiro to Host the Summit
The official announcement of the city as host strengthens Rio de Janeiro’s international profile, according to Mayor Eduardo Paes. “Rio will once again be the capital of the world. It was for the G20 last year, and now for the BRICS,” he stated.

Additionally, partner countries such as Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan will participate in the event.
Criteria for Membership
Aspiring nations must meet specific criteria to join the bloc, maintaining its geographic balance and fostering good diplomatic ties. Moreover, they must be United Nations members, dedicated to advancing International Cooperation. The BRICS Summit sets a high bar for new entrants, ensuring they prioritize Governance Reform.
Partner Country Modality
The Kazan Summit introduced the partner country modality in 2024, enabling participating countries to join BRICS events by consensus. Consequently, over 30 countries have expressed interest in joining this economic bloc, either as members or partners. Announcement and Preparation
The announcement was made by Minister Mauro Vieira (Foreign Affairs) alongside Mayor Eduardo Paes on February 15th. Authorized by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the event will bring together Heads of State from 20 countries, including full members and partners of the BRICS group.
