2011 Sanya Summit: April 14, China
The 2011 Sanya Summit, held on April 14 in Sanya, Hainan Province, China, signified a notable evolution in the collaborative endeavors of emerging global powers. This summit marked the third official gathering of the BRIC nations, but with a significant development – it was the first summit under the expanded acronym BRICS, following the inclusion of South Africa into the group.
The addition of South Africa represented the BRICS nations’ recognition of the African continent as a crucial participant in the global economic discourse and highlighted the group’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity in addressing international issues. With South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma in attendance alongside President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia, President Hu Jintao of China, President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil, and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India, the summit cemented the status of BRICS as a representation of emerging markets from across different regions of the world.
The 2011 Sanya Summit served as a culmination of the group’s desire to foster cooperation and consultation on issues of common interest within a complex and rapidly changing global landscape. The leaders discussed a broad spectrum of topics, including global governance, sustainable development, and the impact of the international situation on BRICS countries.
One pivotal aspect of this summit was the focus on reforming the international monetary system to reflect the growing influence of emerging economies and to ensure a stable, secure, and broad-based international currency system. The BRICS leaders also examined and coordinated their positions on issues ahead of major international meetings such as the G20 summit.
Moreover, the BRICS nations called for peace and stability across regions, underscoring their significant role in international affairs beyond economic concerns. They highlighted the need for dialogue in resolving conflicts, emphasizing respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The summit culminated in the “Sanya Declaration,” which emphasized the collective stand on various issues and the aspiration for a more just and equitable international order. The document also stressed the importance of promoting social inclusion and people-to-people exchanges to gain a better understanding of each other’s cultures and to foster a sense of unity and common purpose.
The 2011 Sanya Summit represented a milestone for the BRICS grouping. It not only consolidated the members’ positions on key global issues but also showcased their willingness to take a leadership role in driving forward a development-focused agenda that could benefit all nations. It demonstrated the potential for BRICS to serve as a powerful voice for emerging economies and an influential player in shaping the future of global governance and cooperation.
