BRICS Sports Ministers Meeting 2017 June 17-21, Guangzhou, China
The BRICS Sports Ministers Meeting and associated BRICS Games in 2017 were significant events in fostering sports cooperation among the BRICS nations. The 2nd BRICS Games took place in Guangzhou, China from June 17-21, 2017. This event featured competitions in three sports:
- Volleyball
- Wushu
- Taolu
Approximately 300 athletes from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa participated in the games. The Chinese delegation consisted of 53 members, including 32 athletes, with an average age of 21.4 years. Key highlights of the event include:
- Opening Ceremony: The games were officially opened at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center on June 17, 2017.
- Presidential Support: Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to welcome the guests, athletes, and coaches, emphasizing the importance of the event in improving performance, popularizing traditional sports, and enhancing friendship among BRICS nations.
- Cultural Exchange: The opening ceremony featured traditional Chinese performances such as dragon and lion dances, as well as an Indian Yoga performance by a 20-member delegation from India.
- Venues: The competitions were held at the Tianhe Sports Gymnasium, Guangzhou Sport University Asian Games Gymnasium, and the Guangzhou Polytechnic Sports Gymnasium.
- Additional Activities: Besides the sports competitions, the organizers arranged various cultural events for the athletes and coaches.
The 2017 BRICS Games were significant for several reasons:
- Continuation of BRICS Sports Cooperation: This event followed the first BRICS Under-17 Football tournament held in Goa, India, in 2016.
- Prelude to BRICS Summit: The games were seen as a precursor to the 9th BRICS Summit, which China hosted in September 2017 in Xiamen.
- Promoting Sports Development: The event aimed to showcase how emerging economies like China view sports as a matter of public concern, focusing on people’s happiness and welfare rather than just commercialization.
- Strengthening BRICS Cooperation: The games were part of a broader initiative to enhance collaboration among BRICS nations in various fields, including sports and culture.
It’s worth noting that the BRICS Sports Ministers later signed a Memorandum of Understanding on “Cooperation in the field of Physical Culture and Sport” on August 25, 2020, further solidifying their commitment to sports cooperation. The BRICS Games have continued since then, with subsequent events held in different member countries, although there were interruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The games serve as an important platform for cultural exchange, sports development, and strengthening ties among the BRICS nations.
As of 2017, the China BRICS Chair has not disclosed any information about the meeting, nor has any documentation or updates been made publicly available regarding the event.
