The BRICS Ministers of Education held their 2nd meeting on March 2-3, 2015 in Brasilia, Brazil. During this meeting, the ministers discussed the idea of setting up BRICS University campuses in each member country, both virtually and through intensive student, faculty, and research collaboration. They also supported the establishment of a Working Group to work out the modalities of a BRICS Network University (BNU), which was included in the Brasilia Declaration.

Key Outcomes

The BNU project was set into motion with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for its establishment on November 18, 2015 in Moscow by the BRICS Education Ministers. The MoU envisages cooperation among universities from the five nations in six thematic areas: Energy, Computer Science & Information Security, BRICS Studies, Ecology & Climate Change, Water Resources & Pollution Treatment, and Economics.

The 2nd BRICS Education Ministers’ Meeting in Brasilia paved the way for enhanced educational cooperation and the launch of the BRICS Network University initiative.  This multilateral academic collaboration aims to build capabilities to address shared challenges through joint research and education programs.
