Involvement in BRICS

The BRICS leaders are actively involved in the decision-making process of the organization. They play a crucial role in shaping the policies and direction of the BRICS bloc. The leaders are involved in various ways, including:

  1. Summit Meetings: The BRICS leaders meet annually to discuss and decide on key issues related to the organization. The summits are held in different cities, with each country hosting the summit in turn.
  2. Working Groups: The BRICS leaders chair various working groups, which focus on specific areas such as trade, finance, and security. The leaders provide guidance and direction to these working groups.
  3. Ministerial Meetings: The BRICS leaders meet with their respective ministers to discuss and decide on key issues related to the organization.
  4. Dialogue Partners: The BRICS leaders engage with dialogue partners, including other countries, international organizations, and civil society organizations, to promote cooperation and collaboration.

Governance Structure

The BRICS governance structure is designed to ensure effective decision-making and coordination among the member countries. The key components of the governance structure are:

  1. BRICS Summit: The BRICS summit is the highest decision-making body of the organization. The summit is attended by the BRICS leaders, who make key decisions on the direction and policies of the organization.
  2. BRICS Council: The BRICS Council is a permanent body that provides guidance and direction to the organization. The council is composed of the BRICS leaders and their representatives.
  3. Working Groups: The working groups are responsible for implementing the decisions of the BRICS summit and council. The working groups are composed of experts and officials from the member countries.

At the helm of the consortium nations lie the BRICS Leaders, who play a crucial role in shaping the bloc’s direction and fostering cooperation.

Individual Leaders, National Priorities:

BRICS is not a formal alliance with a centralized governing body. Instead, the member states retain their independence, with each leader focusing on their nation’s priorities while collaborating on issues of mutual interest. Here’s a glimpse into how leaders are involved:

Brazil: President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, re-elected in 2022, brings a focus on social development and economic integration within BRICS.

Russia: President Vladimir Putin has been a key figure in BRICS, emphasizing security cooperation and a challenge to Western dominance. However, with the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, Russia’s role might be impacted.

India: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a vocal advocate for BRICS as a platform for economic development and South-South cooperation. He pushes for reforms in global institutions to reflect the growing influence of emerging economies.

China: President Xi Jinping is a central figure, with China’s economic clout significantly impacting BRICS’ agenda. He advocates for a multipolar world order and increased cooperation on infrastructure development.

South Africa: President Cyril Ramaphosa chairs the most recent BRICS summit (2023) and focuses on expanding the bloc’s membership and influence in Africa.

The New Additions:

With the proposed expansion of BRICS in 2023, the following leaders will also be part of the evolving leadership landscape:

Egypt: President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi could bring a focus on counter-terrorism cooperation and infrastructure development in Africa.

Ethiopia: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali might advocate for solutions to regional conflicts and economic development in Africa.

Iran: President Ebrahim Raisi could introduce a perspective on navigating economic sanctions and developing alternative financial systems.

Saudi Arabia: Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman could contribute to discussions on energy security and diversification within BRICS.

United Arab Emirates: President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan might bring expertise in technological innovation and investment in renewable energy to the table.

It’s important to note that the official leadership structure for the expanded BRICS is yet to be determined.

Decision-making in BRICS operates on the principle of consensus. Leaders strive for common ground while acknowledging national priorities. This collaborative approach fosters a sense of ownership among members but can also make progress on complex issues slow.

The Expanding BRICS Landscape:

A significant development is the  expansion of BRICS. In 2023, South Africa announced the invitation of five new members –  Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. This expansion will alter the bloc’s dynamics and leadership structure.

BRICS leadership is a collective endeavor driven by the individual priorities of member states. Collaboration through summits, dialogues, and working groups guides the bloc’s direction. The  expansion of BRICS presents exciting possibilities but also raises questions about future leadership dynamics. As BRICS continues to evolve, the role of its leaders in shaping a new world order will be an ongoing story to watch.
