Information

The BRICS Joint Statistical Publication (BRICS JSP) is an annual statistical publication produced by the National Statistical Offices (NSOs) of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa).

The first edition of the BRICS JSP was released in 2010, and since then, it has been published annually, with each BRICS country taking turns to bring out the publication.

The release of the BRICS JSP is essential and fundamental to developing the statistical cooperation mechanism among the BRICS countries.

The BRICS JSP provides comprehensive statistical data on the main socio-economic indicators of the five BRICS countries. It comprises 15 chapters, with the first chapter providing a comparison of the member countries on selected indicators and statistics, while the remaining chapters contain summaries and detailed statistics for each country.

In addition to the annual BRICS JSP, a shorter version called the BRICS JSP Snapshot was introduced in 2021 under India’s chairship of BRICS, to engage a wider range of users. This shorter version has also been continued in subsequent years under the chairship of China and South Africa.

The BRICS JSP and its Snapshot are public documents and serve as an important tool in furthering the spirit of BRICS partnership among the people of the BRICS countries.

The BRICS nations – represent a significant force in the global economy. Understanding their individual and collective performance is crucial for investors, policymakers, and researchers alike. This is where the BRICS Joint Statistical Publications (JSPs) come into play.

Shining a Light on Comparable Data

Traditionally, comparing economic and social data across different countries can be challenging due to variations in how statistics are collected and reported. The BRICS JSPs address this by presenting information in a standardized format, ensuring data from each member nation is directly comparable. This allows for a clearer picture of the BRICS bloc’s performance relative to itself and the wider world.

Benefits for Businesses and Investors

The standardized data in BRICS JSPs offers valuable insights for businesses and investors. By comparing factors like trade volumes, foreign direct investment, and GDP growth across BRICS members, companies can make informed decisions about potential markets and investment opportunities.

Informing Policy Decisions

Policymakers also benefit from the insights offered by BRICS JSPs. The publications enable them to track trends in areas like poverty, education, and healthcare across the BRICS nations. This allows for informed policy decisions that address shared challenges and promote regional cooperation.

A Tool for Research and Analysis

Researchers can leverage BRICS JSPs to conduct comparative studies on various social and economic issues. The standardized data facilitates in-depth analysis of the BRICS bloc’s development trajectory and its impact on the global landscape.

Looking Ahead: Continued Importance

The BRICS JSPs are a vital tool for promoting transparency, fostering collaboration, and enhancing our understanding of this influential economic bloc. As the BRICS nations continue to grow and evolve, these publications will remain a key resource for navigating the complexities of the globalized world.
