The BRICS Foreign Ministers met on September 26, 2012, in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The key topics of discussion included the escalating violence and deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria. The ministers expressed deep concern over the increasing violations of human rights and international humanitarian law in Syria. They called for an immediate and simultaneous ceasefire and the establishment of a political reconciliation process involving all segments of Syrian society, supported by the international community. The ministers reiterated their support for the work of the Joint UN-Arab League Special Representative, Lakhdar Brahimi, and the Joint Communiqué of the Geneva Action Group.
