BRICS Ministers Discuss Education 2013, Paris, France
On November 5th, 2013, on the sidelines of the 37th UNESCO General Conference in Paris, France, history was made. The Education Ministers from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) came together for their first-ever formal meeting. This gathering marked a significant step towards increased cooperation in the educational sphere among these emerging economic giants.
The central theme of the meeting was fostering collaboration in education and training across BRICS nations. Discussions revolved around establishing partnerships and knowledge exchange programs, particularly in the area of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). The ministers also explored avenues for making qualifications obtained in one BRICS country more easily recognized and transferable in others.
The outcomes of the meeting were promising. All parties acknowledged the strategic importance of educational cooperation within the BRICS bloc and pledged to raise the issue at the next BRICS Summit. Strengthening collaboration between BRICS universities emerged as a key point of focus, alongside potential joint initiatives in TVET and student exchange programs.
The meeting also highlighted the potential for collaboration with UNESCO. Discussions centered on how BRICS and UNESCO could work together to accelerate progress towards Education for All (EFA) goals and shape discussions on the post-2015 education agenda.
This inaugural meeting of BRICS Education Ministers signifies a new chapter in educational cooperation between these influential countries. By fostering knowledge exchange, promoting technical skills development, and facilitating student mobility, the BRICS nations have the potential to empower their future generations and contribute to a more skilled global workforce.
