The 10th BRICS Communications Ministers’ Meeting and Digital BRICS Forum took place in Innopolis, Republic of Tatarstan, on 26-27 September, as part of Russia’s BRICS Chairship in 2024. This significant event brought together top officials from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa to discuss the main theme: “Sovereignty vs. Interconnectivity: Finding a Balance.”
Fostering Digital Cooperation in Information Technology
Maksut Shadayev, Minister of Digital Development, Communications, and Mass Media of the Russian Federation, emphasized the importance of BRICS communication ministries working together to promote digital cooperation in information technology. He highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence and digital services in driving economic growth and improving people’s lives.
Expanding Cooperation in Quantum Technologies
During the meeting, BRICS representatives agreed to cooperate in the field of quantum technologies, a groundbreaking area with immense potential for innovation. Specifically, Russia and China plan to implement projects in the development of language models. This joint effort will be facilitated through the BRICS Alliance for Artificial Intelligence Development and the Alliance for the Protection of Children in the Digital Environment.

The BRICS Communication Ministries convened to foster dialogue on innovative sector development. Sonia Faustino, Brazil’s Executive Secretary, emphasized the significance of this exchange. Meanwhile, South Africa’s Deputy Minister Alvin Botes highlighted the benefits of intra-bloc collaboration. He noted how these interactions bolster international cooperation’s effectiveness. The gathering also addressed cybersecurity concerns, recognizing its growing importance in the digital landscape.
