BRICS Meetings of Ministers Responsible for Anticorruption

The first BRICS Anti-Corruption Ministerial Meeting was held virtually on July 13, 2022, hosted by China as the Chinese Presidency of the BRICS Anti-Corruption Working Group (ACWG) in 2022.

The high-level meeting brought together BRICS ministers to discuss strengthening cooperation against transnational corruption. Ghada Waly, Director-General/Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), delivered remarks highlighting the negative impact of corruption on development and the importance of the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) as the universal framework for international anti-corruption cooperation.

Key outcomes of the meeting included:

– Adoption of a communique affirming the negative effect of corruption on development, recognizing UNCAC, and stressing the importance of information-sharing, capacity-building, and awareness-raising
– Endorsement of the BRICS Initiative on Denial of Safe Haven to Corruption, a framework to strengthen UNCAC implementation
– Commitment to further strengthen anti-corruption capacity building through education and training programs and enhance anti-corruption cooperation.

The International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA) attended the meeting, with Dean Thomas Stelzer underlining IACA’s work with BRICS countries and readiness to support targeted research and capacity building in fighting corruption.

The meeting was welcomed by BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs in their July 2022 statement, who encouraged the ACWG to continue its important work.
