BRICS Agriculture Ministers Meetings, March 11-13, 2015, Brasilia, Brazil
At the 4th Meeting of the BRICS Ministers of Agriculture and Agrarian Development in Brasilia, Brazil, on March 13, 2015, agricultural leaders from BRICS countries followed up on the Fortaleza Declaration and Action Plan to further agricultural cooperation and address global food security concerns. The ministers reviewed contributions to reducing food insecurity, particularly through public procurement from family farmers. They lauded past collaboration and dialogues at international organizations like the FAO and committed to continuing these efforts, including emphasizing the importance of soil management in the context of the International Year of Soils.
The group reaffirmed their dedication to working within the UN framework on Sustainable Development Goals and discussed ongoing initiatives such as the Basic Agricultural Information Exchange System. Agricultural trade and investment were encouraged, seeking to enhance market access through fairs and exhibitions. They acknowledged the need for cooperation to combat the effects of climate change on agriculture and pushed for a unified approach in WTO negotiations, striving to eliminate export subsidies and level the playing field in agricultural trade.
The ministers also backed intensifying cooperation in agricultural science, technology, and capacity building, as well as aligning food safety standards with international guidelines. They highlighted the New Development Bank’s role in infrastructure and development and prepared for Russia to host the next ministerial meeting, acknowledging Brazil’s role in hosting the current session and its contribution to the dialogue on food security strategies.
